shopping in baltimore

reading glasses from the visionary art museum- get it?! many different styles- only $5.00! avam's shop, sideshow, is the best museum shop i've ever been to. full of heart and fun. the opposite of the usual humorless, deliberately "tasteful" aesthetic of most museum stores.

the kikkerland toothbrush set is from trohv. there is so much to covet in this beautifully curated hampden based store, which also carries evolution now clothing. the toothbrushes are 8.50 for a set of 5- less than an ugly toothbrush! great for a family or for a vacation house. trohv will be opening a second store in dc this spring.

good bloody marys- trestle on tenth.

trestle has two unusually tasty house recipe bloody marys- painstakingly concocted with unexpected secret ingredients (like fennel) ! everything we tried on the swiss inspired menu was great. cheese and house made artisanal pickle selections mouth watering. very pleasant contemporary/cozy atmosphere, too.

we took a quick sweep through the armory show on sunday, closing day. it was too crowded. just took some pictures of things that seemed photogenic or compelling somehow.

at one point chuck close rolled by on his large and elaborate state of the art wheel chair vehicle. he was accompanied by a conspicuously tall stylish glamazon reminiscent of naomi cambell- but artier. he was wearing bright orange framed glasses and a pork pie hat. he looked great, and perfectly complemented this art here (man, machine and vivid color...)

ha few weeks ago inc. magazine did a photo shoot for an article on etsy. it took place in this beautiful midtown penthouse loft but they took the photos (portraits of etsy shop owners) in front of a plain blank backdrop.

cristalino - favorite cheap "champagne" (actually a cava.) i got mike a case of it for christmas one year but unfortunately it wasn't the best gift because i ended up drinking most of it. sad.

sammallahti- cartier-bresson of animal photography? don't mean to trivialize (quite the opposite!) or oversimplify, but these shots are compelling because the very deliberate compositions are captured in decisive moments; ... a strange surreal feeling when a lovely landscape is briefly inhabited and echoed by a stretching dog, strutting blackbirds, a seated monkey...

good bloody marys- with sandwiches. rye, freemans, pj clarkes.

rye serves a tasty bloody mary variation made with a dash of sriracha (thai chili garlic sauce.) also, one of the great sandwiches of new york- braised short rib with onion jam and fresh horseradish. yum!

another great sandwich /bloody mary combination can be had at freemans for brunch- roast pork with pickled zucchini and garlic mayo.

pj clarkes has a hearty masculine house mix bloody mary with big chunks of horseradish, nice with their excellent crab cake. however, tina and i have had even better- the best crab cake /bloody mary combination ever (!) at a sad southern maryland trailer trash flea market. more on that at some point.

la crepe c'est si bon

a pretty little crepe place opened on eldridge street across from vanessa's dollar dumpling house. vanessa's was really crowded on sunday so we tried it out. it was very quiet and sunny. only three or four people came and left while we were there, but one of them turned out to be someone mike knew in ireland 15 years ago. crazy. the crepes were delicious!
