great old man's dive bar owned by jimmy who formerly trained boxers. photos of boxers all over the walls. completely authentic and uncontrived. no tourists. and very inexpensive. down the street from the algonquin.

my friend laura was once waiting for a table in the russian tea room when the then very old salvador dali and his notorious wife gala were dining.

laura was an interesting, chic woman. her style was sort of prep/punk, uptown/downtown. it worked equally well for the hamptons or in the east village; she had blond hair and an ever so slightly louche jean harowe sassy quality. when i ran into her she always had something fabulous to tell me: she was going helicopter skiing in alaska, or entering the witness protection program. she dated iggy pop.

anyway dali and gala invited her to sit with them and she did.

i'm afraid these days the tea room isn't the type of place where dali would want to dine- but then it was still great.

we spent 5 days in boston and found this cool place- founded in 1875 as a french restaurant, subsequently italian and now a chic foodie destination that has retained its vintage european air. five charming dining areas occupy three stories between bromfield st and boswell, a little cobble stoned rue just a half a block long. we ate here 3 times, in the glassed in dining room upstairs and outside in the garden. marliave marliave cheese

flea market loot

french colonial stamps i found in a collection from the indoor flea market at 24th and 6th ave.
it's a glass side early 20th c. ben nevis in scotland according to a piece of paper glued to the glass. got it at the the hells kitchen flea market on sunday (nyc.)
