we were at MoMA on memorial day when mayhem broke out. it was the end of the maria abramovic show. as the artist and performer/ participants converged, the cheering crowd swelled and went crazy- people were running through the museum to the overlooking balconies to witness or just to find out what was happening. guards linked arms and stood in front of the throngs crowding toward the overlooks, trying vainly to move people along. on every floor people craned their necks and stretched camera clutching hands over the glass rails, as the crowd downstairs roared and clapped continuously for 15 minutes.
